Starting any new home improvement project can be a very daunting task, and landscaping projects are definitely no exception. With so many different types of products, manufacturers, retailers, designers and contractors, it can become very overwhelming, very quickly. As with any type of renovation, it pays to be both informed and educated in order to avoid costly mistakes and/or future rework. Landscaping projects are usually handled in one of two ways:

1. The work is completed by the home owner him/herself. In these cases the risk is relatively low for smaller projects, but can become a much bigger problem with medium to large projects. Relatively small miscalculations or misinformation can lead to disastrous results and costly repairs.
2. The work is completed by a contractor. You expect that contractor that you hire to complete the work you are paying for will be an expert in his/her field and be able to turn your vision into a long lasting reality. But how do you know if you have the right person for the job? One way, is to ask for references, but who feels comfortable or has the time to follow-up on them? Will the contractor be willing to share contact information for previous customers? (Usually not.) You may find yourself “rolling the dice” in the hopes that you have chosen the right person for the job.

• Project management/ consulting: Sometimes, things just don’t look or feel right. Trust your instincts: We can come into a project and inspect how things are going in order to set your mind at ease (if the work is being done right) or offer valuable advice (if things are not going as they should).
